Environment Minister Mark H Durkan has announced his Department’s intention to give planning permission for the construction of over 1,600 new homes across various parts of the city of Derry.
Eight planning applications for significant housing schemes will be presented to the 3 March Planning Committee of Derry City Council with an opinion to approve.
The largest proposal is an outline application for 1,400 new homes on lands to the North of Skeoge Road. Approval is also recommended for 88 much needed social housing units at Skeoge Link Road for Fold Housing Association.
Minister Mark Durkan said: “I am confident that Derry City Council will give their backing to these proposals. I am particularly pleased that planners have given a green light to the important development at Skeoge, which will provide 1,400 much needed new homes. This was a complex planning application and I am delighted that we have finally got it over the line. People have been waiting for this good news for a long time. These proposals will be also be a real boost to the local economy providing much needed construction jobs in these hard economic times.”
