ENVIRONMENT MINISTER TO RESPOND TO ENVIRONMENT GROUPS’ CONCERNS OVER BUDGET

Admin 2 Press Releases, Stormont

The groups have highlighted their concerns about the implications of the Executive’s final Budget for the DOE and for their funding during the next financial year.
The Minister’s comments follow on from his meeting today with the Assembly’s Environment Committee.
Speaking after the meeting the Minister said: “I am very aware of the very difficult financial position faced by a range of environmental groups across the North. I have taken steps to ensure that funding will continue to flow to groups over the next three months. During that time I will engage with the sector and with the Environment Committee to decide how funding that will become available from the Carrier Bag Levy next year is allocated to sustain some of the key environmental programmes delivered by these groups.
“I cannot promise that every group will get the money it hopes to get, but I will do my best to make sure that up to £1 million of Carrier Bag money is made available for this purpose. I have instructed my officials to work urgently on this over the next week so that I can consult the organisations as soon as possible after Easter.”
