SDLP Foyle MLA, Mark H Durkan has today supported the call from a coalition of charities and voluntary organisations on the Northern Ireland Executive to strengthen a programme that annually provides vital support to help more than 26,000 people in Northern Ireland live as independently as possible.
Mr Durkan said: “The Supporting People programme, which provides some 882 housing related support services across Northern Ireland, allows the most vulnerable to live more full independent lives.
“This programme has helped countless numbers of people with learning disabilities, the elderly and the homeless have a higher quality of life. Today I have come out to support the continuation of this invaluable service and to ensure than no cuts are imposed on this programme.
“I cannot stress the vital need for the Supporting People programme and with the distinct danger facing our public services, we must ensure that services that bridge the gap, such as these remain. Over the years, this programme has helped thousands of people live independently, keeping the most vulnerable out of costly hospital admissions and freeing up reliance on other services.”
“I will be advocating within the Executive my support for the future of this programme in order to protect the most vulnerable in our society.”
